Wearing Shortlette Slip Shorts with Fibromyalgia

by Carrie Adorna June 12, 2014

I've been coping with Fibromyalgia for nearly 10 years and is a big reason I'm such a comfort girl!  Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease that causes widespread pain in the body, joint tenderness, and sensitivity. There is no cure, and it’s managed with a variety of medications, exercise, and diet.   For people with Fibromyalgia small things like tags and closures can be vary irritating and clothes that are too tight or improperly fitting can cause severe pain.  I know because this is my life.

I started out having chronic pain in my hands and elbows.  Next thing I knew I had chronic pain in all my joints and chronic fatigue.  I couldn't walk to the end of the driveway without getting winded.  One time I went to make the bed and I fell asleep for 3 hours on top of the bed.   I get hives because my body is on overload all the time.  Hives from crazy stuff like eyebrow wax, shoes, and even hair sprays.  I have to be very careful about what I put on my skin & hair.  These are some of the reasons you might see me with crazy hair. I never have false eyebrows and I don't use sunless tanner.

When it comes to clothes, foundation wear is what  touches the body all the time.  They can cause the most irritation or comfort if done right.  Trust me on this, I know!  Tags and clasps are often irritating for me.  Even seams in the wrong location or thread can be irritating to the point of causing a rash.

Fabric

People often say cotton or silk only because synthetic fabrics don't breathe well and cause moisture to build up.  I've tried it all and when I was developing the Shortlette Slip Short I thought cotton was going to be the best-until I found out that cotton retains 7% of it's weight in water vs polyesters .4%!  From my experience cotton does feel great but it is hotter in the summer than our Signature Cool Breathable Fabric.  That's why UnderSummers uses the fabric we use.  It is the best fabric I could find.

Foundation Wear

Having foundation wear, underwear & bras, that are gentle on the body are a must with fibromyalgia.  I typically wear my Shortlettes & semi-loose sports bras.  These types of garments hugs my body without squeezing and causing pain or irritation.  For me, this is the best option.  I love wearing Undersummers Shortlettes because they allow me to wear cute loose dresses.  Now my second layer isn't irritating too!
